Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Liberty: Sponsorship for Foreign Graduates

Programme Description

The Friedrich Nauman Foundation sees itself as the foundation for liberal politics in Germany. It is closely connected to the FPD party. The foundation has been sponsoring students at German universities since 1973, and also at universities of applied sciences since 1990. Besides excellent academic achievements it also expects commitment to political and social issues and positive personal qualities such as reliability, motivation and decisiveness of its students. The objective of sponsoring foreign students is that they return to their home countries after their examinations and put the knowledge they have gained to use in the interests of those countries. Approximately 60 foreign doctoral candidates are sponsored every year.

Target Group
The following is expected of applicants:
  • Giftedness: Not only above-average subject-specific aptitude, but also other specialised interests are evaluated.
  • Personal qualities: These include reliability, motivation, decisiveness and a willingness to assume responsibility and actively contribute with one's abilities to the further development of society.
  • Liberal commitment to social and political issues: Activities in student administration, on higher education boards, in a liberal political party, in a political student organisation or in social institutions or associations are desirable.
Academic Requirements
Doctorates following degrees in medicine and dentistry, postdoctoral programmes, postgraduate courses after a degree (Diplom/Master), final stage doctorates and foreign graduates abroad are not sponsored. Lawyers may only apply for a doctorate sponsorship if they have already completed their judicial service training or do not intend to begin it until after their doctorate.

Number of Scholarships
Approx. 60 foreign doctoral candidates

Duration
Graduate scholarships are initially awarded for one year, and extended by a further year on application. Thereafter, extensions may be granted twice for half a year each in very rare exceptional cases, and only with special justification. Sponsorship for longer than three years is not possible.

Scholarship Value
  • Applicants’ earnings will be deducted (if applicable, up to the full scholarship amount) when calculating the scholarship amount. Economic activity is only permitted to a limited degree.
  • Support through liaison lecturers at the university location
  • Furthermore, scholarship holders will be offered a wide range of ideal support opportunities which can be viewed on the Foundation’s website.

Application Papers
  • 1. Fully completed application form,
  • 2. Complete tabular signed C.V.
  • 3. Brief synopsis (max. 7 pages) as well a a precise time and work schedule of the doctorate
  • 4. 2 letters of recommendation from professors at a university in Germany, one of these from the supervisor of the doctorate (including disposition), for organisational reasons, by post only. Please do not send any letters of recommendation by e-mail or fax.
  • 5. Certified copy of higher education examination certificate
  • 6. Confirmation by the faculty concerning unconditional acceptance for doctoral studies with specification of the supervisor of the doctorate, or written confirmation of doctorate [list|7. Photograph on application form and on "personal details" form
  • 8. Signed declaration of consent
Stays abroad during the period of sponsorship are not possible. Please make sure that the documents are complete, but do not submit them in duplicate. Please do not staple the documents or put them in individual plastic sleeves. Please complete legibly in typewriting or print (black pen) and keep to the specified order. This will make things easier for you and us.

Application Deadline
Closing dates for applications are 31st May and 30th November each year.

Alumni Scholarships

These scholarships are gathered from income earned by the alumni affinity services. They are available to you if you are a graduate of any University of Westminster undergraduate degree and plan to proceed to a full-time Masters degree within the University.

Amount: £2,000 tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must be a University of Westminster graduate progressing to a full-time Masters degree at the University.

Criteria: Academic excellence and financial need.

Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Scholarships

These scholarships are jointly funded by the ACU, the University of Westminster and International Students House. They are available to you if you are a member of staff of a ACU member institution in a developing country and are looking to study a full-time Masters in Human Resource Management or Public Communication and Public Relations or another area which is needed by your home university. Capacity Building Scholarships

The University offers Capacity Building Scholarships to upgrade your skills if you are a faculty member of one of our partner colleges at home or overseas. The value of the scholarship varies depending on need. Please contact the Scholarships Office for full details if you fall into this category.

Central American and the Caribbean Scholarships

These scholarships are awarded jointly with International Students House (ISH) and are open to you if you are a Central American or Caribbean national wishing to study a subject useful to the development of the region and intending to return to your country on completion of the course.

Amount: Full tuition fee waivers, accommodation at International Students House, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be from Central America, Mexico or the Caribbean and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree at the University.

Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need.

Commonwealth Broadcasting Association Chevening Scholarship

This scholarship is offered in conjunction with the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA), the University of Westminster, International Students House and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation at International Students House, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be a member of the administrative and production staff currently employed by CBA member institutions in developing Commonwealth countries, wishing to develop your skills in media, public relations or marketing through an appropriate full-time Masters degree.

David Faddy Scholarships

These scholarships have been established in the memory of David Faddy, former Head of the School of Communications, and generously funded by Richard Jenkins and Maureen Amar.

MSc Digital Enterprise Management Scholarship

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be an international student from a developing country and hold an offer for the full-time MSc Digital Enterprise Management at the University.

Diplomatic Academy Scholarships

Amount: Full tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must hold an offer for the full-time MA Diplomatic Studies based in London or at the Paris centre.

Disaster Regeneration Scholarship

This scholarship is open to you if you are an international student from a developing country/region affected by a recent natural or man-made disaster. The intention of this scholarship is to aid in the regeneration of the affected country/region and you must make the case for how your chosen course will do this.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be an international student from a disaster struck developing country or region and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree. You must intend to return home on completion of the course.

Criteria: Academic excellence, development potential and financial need.

MA English Literature Scholarships

Amount: 50% tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must hold an offer for the full-time MA English Literature.

Criteria: Academic excellence and financial need.

EU Newly Acceded and Candidate Countries Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded jointly with International Students House.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation at International Students House, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Romania or Turkey and hold an offer for any full-time Masters degree.

Geoffrey Copland Scholarship

Dr Geoffrey Copland retired as the Vice-Chancellor in July 2007, and this scholarship is named after him in recognition of his unfailing support for the scholarships programme.

Eligibility: You must be an international student from a developing country and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree.

Geoff Marsh Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Geoff Marsh, a visiting professor at the School of Architecture and the Built Environment. The funds for the living costs for the scholar have been raised by friends and colleagues of Geoff Marsh.

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses, flights to and from London and a one year work placement at Investment Property Databank on successful completion of your course, for an appropriate student.

Eligibility: You must be from India and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree within the School of Architecture and the Built Environment or Westminster Business School.

MA Globalisation, Development and Transition Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded jointly with International Students House.

MBI Al Jaber Foundation Scholarships

The MBI Al Jaber Foundation offers scholarships to students from across the Arab world wishing to study for a full-time Masters degree at its partner institutions, including the University of Westminster. The scholarship programme is open to you if you are an Arab resident of the Middle East and North Africa who intends to return to your country of residence and contribute to its future development.

Amount: Full tuition fee waivers, accommodation expenses at the rate of the University's halls of residences, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Eligibility: You must be from the Middle East and hold an offer for a full-time Masters degree.

Organ Scholarship

The University has two historic cinema organs. We are looking for students who can play the organ to use these on a regular basis to keep them in good order. The successful applicant will be expected to play each instrument at least weekly. A cash award of £2,000 per annum is available to the successful candidate. Students should supply details of their ability and achievements as a musician. Students may apply at anytime for this scholarship but priority will be given to early applicants.

Palestinian European Academic Cooperation in Education (PEACE) Scholarships

Vice-Chancellors Scholarship

Our most prestigious award, this scholarship is funded by the Vice-Chancellors Office and is aimed at fully funding a student from a developing country to study a full-time Masters degree at the University. Amount: Full tuition fee waiver, accommodation, living expenses and flights to and from London.

Westminster Business School Scholarships

These six scholarships are offered by Westminster Business School (WBS) to you if you are academically exceptional.

Amount: Full tuition fee waivers.

Eligibility: You must hold an offer for any full-time Masters degree, excluding the MBA, within Westminster Business School.

Criteria: Academic excellence and/or evidence of excellence in previous employment, business and community services.

Scholarships for the Philippines

To encourage academically excellent students from the Philippines to attend the University we are offering a full scholarship to a student to study a Masters programme with us. The scholarship will cover fees, accommodation and flights; living and arrival allowances will also be paid.

Eligibility: You must be a student from the Philippines.

Criteria: Academic excellence, financial need and development potential.

MA International Planning and Sustainable Development Scholarships

A range of scholarships are available to students holding offers on the Universitys MA in International Planning and Sustainable Development. Scholarships range in scope from full to 50 and 25% fee waivers.

Full Scholarship: Latin America

In addition to others listed in this section, scholarships are available which give priority to students from Bolivia, Chile, Guatemala and Panama. Other Latin American students are also encouraged to apply. These are for Masters programmes of the University of Westminster.

Scholarships for China

To celebrate the handover of the Olympic Games from Beijing to London, the University has created a series of scholarships for Chinese students.

Scholarships available range from 50% fee waivers to full scholarships and are for Masters degrees at the University of Westminster.

Part Fee Waiver Scholarships

The University offers a number of part scholarships (£2,000 fee waiver) to you if you are an exceptionally well qualified student from outside the UK/EU. These will be for each year of the undergraduate degree, subject to satisfactory academic progress. University of Westminster and Scindia School (India) Scholarship

Amount: Full tuition fee waiver and accommodation at International Students House.

Eligibility: You must be a scholarship recipient from Scindia School, India, and hold an offer for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Westminster. The scholarship will be renewed each year based on your academic performance.

Criteria: Academic excellence, developmental potential and financial need.

Deadline: 31 May 2010.

EHWLC International Business Programme Progression Scholarship

This scholarship will be for each year of your undergraduate degree, subject to satisfactory academic progress. In the case of courses with a placement year, no scholarship is payable in that year as the University does not charge fees.

Amount: £2,000 fee reduction.

Eligibility: You must be an international student (non-EU) on the International Business Programme at Ealing Hammersmith and West London College and hold an offer (conditional or unconditional) for a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Westminster.

Criteria: Academic excellence.

Deadline: 31 May 2010.
